#Review of #HerSecretWar by @pamlecky published by @AvonBooksUK

If you like a light read, and historical fiction set during WW2 then this book is for you, and the plot involving espionage and love will keep you going until the last page.

Thank you very kindly to Avon Books for my copy of Her secret War

I started this book and wasn’t sure what to expect as I’ve never read anything by Pam Lecky.

But from the first page I was enthralled, a fantastically written and researched. It starts in Dublin, during WW2, and ends in Hampshire, England, in fact not too far from where I live!

The pace is slow but steady, but I loved the way Pam writes about the internal goings-on of the main Character Sarah. The storyline and plot are enough to keep the reader going until the end of the book. I loved the historical settings and the descriptions of being outside during an air raid were quite haunting.

If you like a light read, and historical fiction set during WW2 then this book is for you, and the plot involving espionage and love will keep you going until the last page.

5 Star Read.

I’m Celebrating Black History Month by asking @nadinematheson Author of #TheJigsawMan, some questions.

I’m absolutely honoured that Nadine Matheson agreed to answer some of my questions, as an Ally it means so much.

I’d like to start by asking, have you always wanted to be a writer? And where did the idea of The Jigsaw Man come from?

I always wanted to be a lawyer or a journalist when I was younger. I think the truth is that when I was a kid, I didn’t know that being a writer could be ‘job.’ I don’t remember any of my teachers or careers advisor presenting ‘writer’ as an option. Firstly, I’m a Solicitor who specialises in Criminal Law but I’ve never worked on any serial killer cases, however, there was a case in 2009 (My firm didn’t act on the case) where the victim was dismembered and parts of his body were scattered around Hertfordshire. They called the victim ‘The Jigsaw Man’ and that case always stuck with me. Secondly, I grew up in Deptford, South-East London, next to the River Thames, and I always thought how I would react if I was just walking along the riverbank and found a body part.  It was the combination of ‘The Jigsaw Man’ case and growing up by the river that inspired me to write my novel.

The lead Character in The Jigsaw Man, Detective Inspector Angelica Henley, is a brilliant portrayal of a strong Black Woman, in the Met Police, how much of yourself is in her character? And did you speak with any Black female Detectives in your research?

None of us are perfect but thankfully I don’t share Henley’s personal and professional issues but there are some similarities. We were both born and raised in South-East London to a Grenadian family, our footwear of choice is Adidas Gazelle and we’re both resilient. Henley is also quite spontaneous and there’s a fearlessness in some of the decisions that she makes and I’m a bit like that.  I didn’t speak specifically to any Black Female detectives, but because of my job, I’ve met quite a few, female Detectives of Colour and I think we have similar personal stories of women of colours navigating a career that is predominately white and male.”

The Jigsaw Man is set in London, and you grew up in Deptford, why did you set the novel there and do you have a favourite secret place in London?

I grew up in Deptford and I love Crime fiction, but I always felt that the area where I lived wasn’t represented in the crime novels. I wanted to see South-East London, and especially my London, on the page. I called ‘The Jigsaw Man’ my macabre love letter to South-East London and I’ve loved when readers have contacted me because they recognise or even live in the locations that are mentioned in the book. I do have a favourite place, but I don’t think that it’s a secret anymore; One Tree Hill in Greenwich Park. It has the best view of London

View from One Tree Hill, Greenwich Park, UK

There are some pretty gory scenes in The Jigsaw Man (months after reading I still cannot eat sausages!), where on earth did those come from your mind or real life?

I don’t think that sausage reference was that bad!! None of those scenes were (thank God) the result of any real-life experiences but some of those scenes were inspired by very random things. For example, the scene where we first see Henley examining a body part on the river bank, came to me when I was in my kitchen jointing a raw chicken. I think that I’m inspired by the thought of disturbing the normality and almost banality of life by inserting a moment of chaos. I think that it can be more disturbing to compare a moment of brutality against an image of uncontroversial normality i.e. sausages.

If The Jigsaw Man is turned into a Movie or TV Adaptation, who would you like to play Angelica?

I like the idea of Naomie Harris, Jodie Turner Hall or Lashana Lynch.

As a child growing up, were you an avid reader? Do you have a favourite childhood book?

I’ve always loved books and I would read everything and anything. The library or being in a bookshop was my happy place. My favourite books were ‘Wind in the Willows’, ‘Wizard of Oz’ and ‘The Children of Cherry Tree Farm.

Your daytime job as a Criminal Solicitor, must be very rewarding, does it also give you inspiration for more books?

Definitely. It’s not one specific case that has inspired but it might be certain character traits of my clients that have sparked an idea or a scene. I’ve always loved the fact that every client that I’ve represented has their own story and their motivations and I try to remember that when I create my own characters.  My job is rewarding when I’ve got the right result for my client and sometimes that may not necessarily be an acquittal. It may be that their conviction has allowed them to engage in a rehabilitation programme or for them to have their mental health issues finally addressed instead of being lost in the prison system.

What is your favourite book you’ve read this year and why?

I have two. Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby and Do No Harm by Jack Jordan.

Do you have a favourite Author or favourite book of all time?

I can’t pin it down to just one author or book! But American Tabloid by James Ellory,  The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan and ‘The Spy Who Came in From the Cold’ by John Le Carré are in my Top 10.

What were the challenges you faced growing up in Deptford? And did you have a role model?

I have very supportive parents and they raised me with a strong sense of self and awareness of the world, therefore I don’t think that I had any real challenges growing up.  I didn’t grow up in a bubble I was very aware of the realities of the world and how certain people would make assumptions about me because I was a Black girl from a working-class, Grenadian family from South-East London.  My family were my best role models.”

If you could go back in time, to one historical event, to witness it, what would it be and why?

I’m always intrigued by the idea of corruption and also denial which means that I am obsessed with the  Watergate Scandal. I would have loved to have been there when that story was breaking.”

You can pick 4 famous people, dead or alive, for a dinner party, who would you pick and why?

Oprah Winfrey, Prince, Michelle Obama and Michaela Coel. They are all brilliant, inspiring and unapologetic about who they are and have met every challenge that’s come their way.

When you are writing do like silence or do you listen to music?

I need noise when I’m writing. I’ll listen to music, podcasts, non-fiction audiobooks or just the plain old radio. Silence is painful!”

Finally, What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

I have two. ‘If you don’t ask, you don’t get’  and ‘Don’t waste your energy worrying. Put that energy into something else.’

WOW! What a fantastic set of Answer’s, thank you once again Nadine for taking the time to do this.

My #Review of #OpalCountry by @hammerNow published by @Wildfirebks….OUT ON 6th JANUARY 2022

OPAL COUNTRY BY CHRIS HAMMER

Opals…

In the desolate outback town of Finnigans gap, police struggle to maintain law and order. Thieves pillage opal mines, religious fanatics recruit vulnerable youngsters and billionaires do as they please.

Bodies…

Then an opal miner is found crucified and left to rot down his mine. Nothing about the miner’s death is straight-forward, not even who found the body. Homicide detective Ivan Lucic is sent to investigate, assisted by inexperienced young investigator Nell Buchanan.

But Finnigans Gap has already ended one police career and damaged others, and soon both officers face damning allegations and internal investigations. Have Ivan and Nell been set up, and if so, by whom?

Secrets…

As time runs out, their only chance at redemption is to find the killer. But the more they uncover, the more harrowing the mystery becomes, and a past long forgotten is thrown into scorching sunlight.

Because in Finnigans Gap, nothing stays buried for ever.

I’ve loved every book so far by Chris Hammer, and am so thrilled to have been given the opportunity to review Opal Country by the publishers Wildfire Books. Thank you so much. 🙏

We start the story in the outback of Australia, at night, with a team of ratters entering a mine in the dead of night, what they find is a hideously crucified, Christ-like, corpse instead of Opals and makes them retreat pretty sharpish!

We then follow Detective Sergeant Ivan Lucic, who as a homicide, detective has travelled from Sydney to investigate the horrible murder.

Chris Hammer manages to weave a really complex storyline involving Opal mining, family, murder, corporate espionage, revenge and the ending of Police Careers, into a phenomenal story, that had me guessing right up to the end as to whom the culprit was, and more importantly why?

The way Chris writes about Australia, the shimmering heat, the oppressiveness of a small town, the community divided by gossip, fears and history is without a doubt brilliant. I could feel myself getting sweaty and anxious in some parts with the relentless sun beating own onto Finnegans Creek.

There are some players from the previous novels in here, even though it’s a standalone, but that just makes it all the better!

And the inclusion of a Map always means it will be a great book in my experience!

Another fantastic 5 ⭐️ start slice of Aussie Noir from the master or Australian Crime Writing, in my opinion.

Finnegans Gap

My #Review of #BadApples 🍏 by @willrdean published by @PointBlackCrime

It only takes one…

A murder

A resident of small-town Visberg is found decapitated

A festival

A grim celebration in a cultish hilltop community after the apple harvest

A race against time

As Visberg closes ranks to keep its deadly secrets, there could not be a worse time for Tuva Moodyson to arrive as deputy editor of the local newspaper. Powerful forces are at play and no one dares speak out. But Tuva senses the story of her career, unaware that perhaps she is the story

I am so in Love with Will Deans character Tuva Moodyson for so many reasons, she’s deaf, she’s fearless, she’s gutsy, she’s got a fit girlfriend and she’s funny, so I was really excited to start reading Bad Apples, Tuva Book 4

Tuva has returned to Gavrik ( Toy Town as she calls it! ) and is back in her old job, as a crime reporter, at the local paper. In the smaller Town of Visberg, high on the hill, the old Reporter has retired and Tuva has taken over the patch. To get used to the place and to start to get to know the locals she starts spending time up there, but on her first visit she encounters a headless corpse!

I’ve devoured everything Will has written and I have to say that this is the best Tuva book so far, the setting is SO atmospheric, so claustrophobic and so easy to picture in your minds eye.

The cast of Visberg locals that Tuva meets are so ethnically mixed and a lot are weird to be fair, BUT that only adds to the plot and frankly what a bloody explosive plot it is!

The build up had me feeling like I was on edge and had me thinking of that classic movie The Wicker Man, the descriptive prose of Pan Night is just absolutely stunning, it sets Tuva in the spooky Visberg during October, to a treat! Swedish Folklore and Will Deans devious mind work SO well together, and will have you gripped!

I am not going to give anything away, as normal BUT it’s a brilliant book…another 3 day read for me! And the ending!!!!!! Will please dont leave me hanging for too long I must read Tuvas book 5 soon!!

Any book that makes you have visceral feelings means it’s a brilliantly written one, this will have you anxious, gripped, over-thinking and downright scared shitless!

5 Star Read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Will Dean grew up in the East Midlands, living in nine different villages before the age of eighteen. After studying law at the LSE, and working many varied jobs in London, he settled in rural Sweden with his wife, and Bernie the St Bernard. He built a wooden house in a boggy forest clearing and it’s from this base that he compulsively reads and writes.

Thank you so much to Faber Books for my early copy of Gabriel Bergmoser’s new Thriller ‘The Inheritance’

A new author to me, and I wasn’t sure what to expect but Holy Moley this book is amazingly gripping and what a bloody thrill ride! ( when I say bloody I mean bloody!)

The main character, Maggie, is a fantastically written woman, she’s damaged and on the run with no one to trust but herself and I loved her! She is the woman I would be if I was in the same situation, kick arse, downright mad, bad and dangerous! A true loveable anti-heroine!

The plot is twisty and keeps you thinking, what can happen next, it doesn’t let you go, it beats you over the head with theories and surprises, and twists, that I never saw coming! And in all that action some wonderful writing, on damaged human beings, and the impact of abuse, trauma and a loveless childhood, which I didn’t expect, very very cleverly written I’m my humble opinion!

For those of you with a weak disposition, I will warn you there are some chunder moments 🤮, BUT they fit in the story perfectly and it runs like a movie, and although I did gag a couple of times, I love that writers can give us such real feelings!

Overall a brilliant, explosive, thriller set in Australia, bent cops, bikies, double crossing people, chasing the same thing and then the final twists, I really loved The Inheritance, so much so that I NEED to read The Hunted immediately!

10 out of 10 stars from me! ⭐️🤩

My Review of the exceptional #BlackReedBay by @Rod_WR @OrendaBooks

When a young woman vanishes from an exclusive oceanfront community in the middle of the night, Detective Casey Wray’s takes on a case that leads her in chilling, unexpected directions … A twisty, breath-taking police procedural. First in a heart-pounding new series.

Black Reed Bay had been sat on my To Read shelf for quite a while ( I should learn that any book published by Orenda Books is amazing!) so on picking it up I was quite ambivalent as to what to expect.

WELL….I cannot jump from the trees and shout enough about how bloody fantastic Black Reed Bay is! Firstly, I must explain that not only am I a huge Crime Fiction fan, I also have an unhealthy obsession with True Crime and serial killers…..I will put this down to being a frustrated wannabe Cop/Detective, alas for many reasons I never got to live my dream job, but came close in being a small Town Traffic Warden in the early 1990’s, chasing shoplifters, and facing gunmen along the way!

That’s me, in action as Traffic Warden 33, during a Bomb Scare at the local Tax Office.

SO I totally got from the beginning of Black Reed Bay, that Rod Reynolds had based it on the Long Island Killer, and it is awesome because of that! If you don’t know the story behind the Long Island Killer check it out on Google, then Black Reed Bay will become even more amazing……!

The characters that he introduces us to to Detective Sergeant Casey Wray and her partner Detective David Cullen are both SO well written, and really likeable, in fact all the cast are really written with a great eye for the human psyche.

Anyway after a weird 911 call they are thrown into a strange investigation where things move at a startling pace and trusting anyone but themselves is a dangerous game.

As you know, I never give the storyline away, but I will say this….it took me 3 days to read, I was totally invested in Casey ‘Big’ Wray and the search for the truth. It was gripping and frankly creepy the way the descriptions of the settings were written, small, bleak, lonely places, came alive in my minds eye.

In Black Reed Bay you will find everything a crime fiction fan loves, and frankly much more….it is just a stellar and bloody brilliant book! In fact, if you’re reading this review, Rod, when the heck is the next instalment going to be ready as I’m obsessed and want to read it now!

Another 5 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ star read, and dare I say my favourite book of the year! Thank you Orenda books for finding these phenomenal authors and publishing their works! ❤️

Rod Reynolds is the author of four novels, including the Charlie Yates series. His 2015 debut, The Dark Inside, was longlisted for the CWA John Creasey (New Blood Dagger), and was followed by Black Night Falling (2016) and Cold Desert Sky (2018); The Guardian have called the books ‘Pitch-perfect American noir.’ A lifelong Londoner, his critically acclaimed standalone thriller, Blood Red City, is the first book set in his hometown, but he’s crossing the ocean again, with his explosive new thriller, Black Reed Bay. Rod previously worked in advertising as a media buyer, and holds an MA in novel writing from City University London. Rod lives with his wife and family and spends most of his time trying to keep up with his two young daughters. Chat to Rod on Twitter @Rod_WR.

My review of Falling by TJ Newman

You just boarded a flight to New York.l

There are one hundred and forty-three other passengers onboard.

What you don’t know is that thirty minutes before the flight your pilot’s family was kidnapped.

For his family to live, everyone on your plane must die.

The only way the family will survive is if the pilot follows his orders and crashes the plane.

Enjoy the flight

You know the sign of a good book?

When you can’t put it down and you’ve read it in 2 days!

I’ve read some brilliant books this year, but Falling is absolutely bloody superb…it’s going in my top 5 books of the year!

The story is gripping from the very first page, and honestly, it reads like a full on thriller movie! There may be other books that involve situations on aircraft, but this is by far the most authentic and well written.

I loved the main characters, the flight attendants Jo, Big Daddy and Kellie were so real I could actually picture them in my mind, the Hoffman family and Bill, the Pilot, were so well written, and so realistic!

And the action and surprises and twists just keep on coming, I don’t think there’s any slow moments in Falling at all! I’ve worked in Aviation so was able to really feel this thriller of a book, and it is SO well researched, it really shines through with authentic narrative when on board the Flight 416.

I’m not going to give away any of the plot, but what I will say is this….if there’s one book involving Aircraft you should read, it’s Falling, you will not be disappointed. And to think this is TJ Newman’s first novel! I do hope she has another one on the go, because what a talent she is!

10 out of 5 Stars for me! Brilliant, unputdownable, gripping, thrilling, realistic and a film waiting to be made!

T. J. Newman,a former bookseller turned flight attendant, worked for Virgin America and Alaska Airlines from 2011 to 2021. She wrote much of Falling on cross-country red-eye flights while her passengers were asleep. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona. Falling is her first novel.

Book Review Be Sure Your Sins by Harry Fisher

Be Sure Your Sins

Six people
Six events
Six lives destroyed

What is the connection?

Detective Sergeant Melissa (Mel) Cooper has two major investigations on the go. The first involves six apparently unrelated individuals who all suffer inexplicable life-altering events.
Mel is also pursuing a serial blackmailer but just as she’s about to prove the link between this man and the six bizarre events, she’s ordered to back off.
So why are her bosses interfering with her investigations? Who are they trying to protect? And how far will they go to stop her?

The answers come from a totally unexpected source.

Firstly thank you to Rebecca at Hobeck Books for my copy of Be Sure Your Sins.

I loved this book, at first I couldn’t understand how the six events that occurred were going to make a story…but as I continued to read, it became a complex and weaving plot that had me gripped.

DS Mel Cooper leads the team investigating these crimes, in Edinburgh. She’s a feisty and clever Detective and with her team they uncover plots of blackmail and hate, which hits her close to home!

Fantastically well written, with wonderful descriptions of Edinburgh and some really clever plots, an intelligent and unputdownable thriller of a book.

A 5 ⭐️ read.

I’m Harry Fisher, I write crime thrillers.

I live in Aberdeen with my wife, Shiona and our dog, Harry. And there it is – the lie exposed. Harry Fisher (the writer) is a pseudonym and here’s why. Despite the fact that in my entire life I’ve never met anyone with the same name as me, when I came to publish WBAL I discovered a namesake down south who writes crime thrillers. Honestly, what are the chances? (Mutter mutter.)

I’m a native of Edinburgh and that’s where Way Beyond A Lie is (partly) set. Write about what you know, and all that. It’s also set in Prague. We went there for a long weekend in 2000 so you can see a theme developing. We’ve been to Ballachulish a couple of times too but I couldn’t fit it into the story. Sorry about that, folks.

My second book Be Sure Your Sins will be published 5 October 2021. Six events happen to Six people that destroy Six lives. It’s not a sequel but DS Mel Cooper from Way Beyond A Lieis the central character. Lots of readers told me they loved her and her sidekick Andrew Young so it was an easy decision to give them their own show.

Things I’m into apart from walking the canine Harry every day: travel, outdoor stuff, wine and food, and if all four can be aligned then so much the better.

STOP PRESS: Harry has recently signed with indie publisher Hobeck Books (Trad Values – Indie Spirit). More news to follow.

My Book Review And Blog Tour Of E C Scullion’s Brilliant Nail-biting Action Suspense Mystery Thriller Evaders Follow Up To The Excellent Intruders @ECScullion @RedDoorBooks #TomHolt #Evaders #BookReview #BlogTour

‘I KNOW THINGS… THINGS I SHOULDN’T KNOW’ A crime has been uncovered. Clare Buchanan has been missing for almost twelve years.

Former security manager Tom Holt knows that the man responsible for her disappearance goes by the name of Capricorn.

On the run in South America, Holt’s life is in danger.

In London, journalist Nash Akinyemi discovers the story that could make her career; a chance to finally step out of her mother’s shadow.

Talented thief Becca Wylde has worked for Capricorn her whole life; now it’s time to break free.

Together, Holt, Nash and Becca must risk everything to expose Capricorn’s secrets to the world. Yet Capricorn has his own weapon. Anton Merrick has a dark past, and he will stop at nothing to keep them all silent…

From the streets of London, to the shores of Chile, to the tropical islands of Panama, the race is on to expose the truth, before the truth gets buried. The second novel from the author of the bestselling Intruders.

Phew I am totally breathless after finishing Evaders the second in the Tom Holt series by the super talented Emma Scullion.

Following on from Intruders we are on another exciting thrill ride through South America on the hunt for justice with Tom Holt and some trusty sidekicks.

This second book almost reads like a family saga, with all the characters and connections, I loved this as Intruders had left me with many questions and in Evaders we get the answers to those. The underlying romance between Tom and Becca is so compelling, and both these characters are now fully rounded and extremely likable….I really want them to get together!

As usual the descriptions of the places Evaders takes us on our thrilling journey are impeccable, and left me googling to see where they were and some real photos. In fact my only suggestion would be to include a map in the beginning of each book (because who doesn’t love maps in books!), the tension and storyline just grows and grows as the book continues, and several times I was on the edge of my seat holding my breath in anticipation!

In short, Evaders is a fantastic follow up to Intruders, I am really looking forward to Book 3 ….hurry up and write it please Emma!
